For much of Joel's life, he has had an interest in buildings; their structure, their form, and their textures and interactivity with their surrounds. For Joel, professional modelmaking was a natural progression from a cabinetmaking/joinery background.
The modelmaking journey started in Sydney, Australia in 1985. After Joel's training was complete, he managed his own studio for a number of years in Sydney before returning to New Zealand with his family. Joel and Lynda eventually settled in Hawke's Bay, where Joel built the family home, as well as a purpose built design studio, on the banks of the Tuki Tuki River.
Below is a small selection of the more recent model builds which the team at HRD (Heritage, Research, Display) has engaged in. They vary in scale and some are from the Hawke's Bay area, including the The Mission Hills residential subdivision, Te Mata Peak Information Centre and the Napier MTG. There are many more.
